They are listed at the top of the page along with the databases they provide. Just select the name of the vendor to link down to information on registration, training and technical support, what promotional material is available, and who to contact.

How it works

  • The Career Cruising database offers intuitive career exploration. Access hundreds of detailed occupation profiles. Each profile includes a job description, information on working conditions, earnings, education and training, a sample career path, links to related occupations, other resources and multimedia interviews. Direct links between careers and related education programs help users plan their next steps. Fully bilingual: English and French.

Training

  • Flash tutorial and regularly scheduled web based training sessions with time and day options throughout one week of each quarter. Recordings available of training sessions for public libraries, colleges and universities for the benefit of staff who prefer to view a training session on their own schedule. Detailed user guides available to all users. Online tutorial.

  • If you already license Career Cruising, contact Heather Philpott at 1-800-965-8541 ext. 131. Career Cruising will refund the dollar value of pre-paid licensing fees, prorated to cover the term of overlap of present contracts.

EBSCO

EBSCO Logo

How it works

  • Designed especially for elementary and middle school students, EBSCO’s NoveList K-8 is an online database with fiction titles chosen specifically to support the school curriculum as well as the pleasure reading needs of students.
  • EBSCO’s NoveList, a readers’ advisory service, not only provides access to information on 155,000 fiction titles, but it also offers a wide range of feature content that will expand your staff’s ability to serve fiction readers of all ages and increase the reach of your library’s program including author read-alikes, book discussion guides, reading lists and more.
  • The Canadian Points of View Reference Centre database provides students with multiple sides of over 100 current issues of interest to Canadians. Students and others simply choose from a list the topics they want to explore. Guides to debate, developing arguments and writing position papers are all included. You can learn more about this valuable resource with EBSCO's Tip of the Week series.

  • Short tutorials on Novelist, Novelist K-8, and Canadian Points of View Reference Centre can be found on the EBSCO link to the Resource Ontario webpage.
  • Scheduled online training sessions on the databases can be found at the EBSCO training link.

To register

  • If you had registered for EBSCO resources in the 2007-2008 period, you do not have to register again, but you will have to go to the EBSCO site to retrieve the URL’s for the new products. Look for Knowledge Ontario URL options on the right hand side of the EBSCO logo. Click on it and it will open to an excel spreadsheet listing the URL’s for the two new databases for your library. The list is in alphabetical order. If you are a new registrant, look at the bottom half of the same page to find information on how to register.

To receive credits
For those libraries that already have current subscriptions to Canadian Points of View Reference Centre, EBSCO will offer the choice to run the balance of those subscriptions as follows:

Promotional material available

  • EBSCO can provide MS Word flyers that can be customized with the KO/Library logo, then printed for display or emailed. Posters, flyers and bookmarks are available online, as well as printable user guides. Dozens of downloadable help sheets can be made handy near computer workstations and make for ideal hand-outs for users.

How it works

  • The Gale Group, Inc., a part of Cengage Learning ("Gale") offers the broadest range of resources through the multiple databases offered. Everything from Periodical databases, special collections aimed at the K-12 audience, databases with a strictly Canadian focus, Newspapers, Health databases, special interest databases through their InfoTrac Collections and a series of digitized books known as the Gale Virtual Reference Library Titles. MARC records are available for the Gale Virtual Reference Library Titles if you want to load them into your library catalogue. Instructions on how to obtain and load the MARC records can be found on the Gale link.
  • A full list of the resources, with details on the content and list of titles in each resource can also be found at http://access.gale.com/Ontario/databases.html
  • The newest resource from Gale is Student Resource Centre – Canadian Edition. An easy to use database containing all things Canadian.

Training

  • Hands-on training on these multi resources can be customized for specific audiences when a group of 15 or more library workers request training.   • If you had previously registered during the 2007-2008 contract years for the Gale databases, you don’t have to do anything further. If you were not registered during these years, go to the Gale registration page and click on Register Now.

To apply for credit

  • If you already license Student Resource Centre – Canadian edition, a Gale representative will contact your library directly to arrange for a credit. Libraries will be offered an additional 50% credit value for any new purchases or subscription of Gale’s products. Credits can also be applied against any existing invoices at 100% of credit value for Gale-owned content. Credits will be issued and prorated to cover the term of overlap of present contracts. If you have not been contacted in regard to a credit, telephone or email Mason Golden, Account Services at Gale, 1-800-877-4253 x 1036, mason.golden@cegage.com.

  • The Gale support site [support.gale.com] contains an amazing range of support options. Everything from user guides, tutorials, tip sheets and FAQs can be found here. How it works

  • Teen Health & Wellness, Real Life, Real Answers is a comprehensive database that allows teens (and those who care about them) to research health-related issues important to their well-being. It’s both a research and report tool and a self-help resource. It also provides curricular support: to ensure its accuracy and relevance, all content is reviewed and updated on an ongoing basis. All content strives to be inclusive in terms of race, sex, religion, economic status and other teen experiences.
