eResources Portal

Q1.

What is Geo-IP Authentication?

A:

Geo-IP Authentication technology identifies and recognizes IP address locations (as being in a specific geographic area; e.g.the province of Ontario).

Q2.

How does this affect access to the Knowledge Ontario databases?

A:

By using Geo-IP Authentication, you and your patrons can get to the Knowledge Ontario databases from any computer in Ontario without having to authenticate. You are also automatically authenticated to the Learn Ontario technology support videos and have direct access to Ask Ontario's chat help and the 4 million digital objects in the Our Ontario portal of history and culture.

Q3.

What’s the advantage of automatic authentication?

A:

This technology lets you access the vast wealth of resources supplied by Knowledge Ontario – and you can get to them simply by visiting eresources.knowledgeontario.ca and clicking on the resource of your choice.

Q4.

Will my users see a difference?

A:

Your users will enjoy faster connectivity – they no longer need to type their library card number or student number to access Knowledge Ontario resources.

Q5.

If patrons access the databases provided by Knowledge Ontario through my library’s website, do they still have to enter their library cards?

A:

Yes, there is no change in the way users access Knowledge Ontario databases through their school or public library websites.

Q6.

What about stats? Will the eResources portal add to my statistics?

A:

Statistics from the eResources portal will be provided to Knowledge Ontario for use in English and French. The portal is designed to generate local statistics and we will let you know what that is available. This portal is meant to ease access issues where local webpages do not exist, and not to replace existing sites where local access and stat collection is already in place. The stat collection you are used to will not change as a result of the portal.

Q7.

Where does Geo-IP Authentication apply?

A:

Geo-IP Authentication applies within the province of Ontario. Those living near borders -- with Manitoba, Quebec or the United States -- may find their IP is actually registered on the other side of the border. The eResource Portal has a form in the help section (here's the form) that lets you report that problem, locate yourself precisely, and allows the IP to be included.

Q8.

Do I need to do anything to activate Geo-IP Authentication?

A:

Not if you're using the eResources Portal.
